Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
